Silicone or Saline Breast Implants?

The present day silicone breast implants are FDA-approved. Both types of breast implants come with their own share of complication and rupture rates. Silicone implants have a more “natural” feel as compared to saline implants.

For patients aged 21 years of age and under, saline breast implants are the only implants approved by FDA. Additionally, these are easier to identify once ruptured as compared to silicone breast implants.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

Dr. Varkarakis performs his cosmetic breast augmentation surgeries in an accredited, private surgical suite, custom-made for plastic surgeons. He performs breast augmentation under general anesthesia with the surgery generally lasting 45 minutes to 1-½ hours, depending on the complexity. Patients recover in the luxury of a private recovery suite with a recovery room nurse dedicated solely to them and their comfort.

Dr. Varkarakis patients experience little pain following a breast augmentation surgery with implants and require narcotics for only one to two days, if at all. Most patients are able to return to work within 2-3 days, drive when they are no longer taking narcotic pain medications, and return to full exercise by six weeks.

Risks and Complications

Just as all surgical procedure, some risks are associated with breast implant surgery. Luckily, most serious complications related with breast augmentation surgery are very rare and can be recognized by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

Only around 1-2 per cent patients suffer from infections and unwanted blood or fluid accumulation. Around 10-15% patients may observe nipple sensation changes.

Usually, breast implants are warranted by the manufacturer against rupture and other mechanical glitches for the initial 10 years.
